Ear and Hearing care for all!

  Hearing is the sense with which we perceive the sounds around us ; through hearing we engage with our environment, communicate with others, express our thoughts, and gain education. Globally more than 1.5 billion people experience some decline in their hearing capacity during their life course, of whom at least 430 million will require suitable rehabilitation such as the use of hearing devices. Loss of hearing , if not identified and addressed, can have far-reaching consequences, adversely affecting language development, psychosocial well-being, quality of life, educational attainment and economic independence at various stages of life. The work of WHO’s programme for ear and hearing care is guided by World Health Assembly resolution WHA70.13 (2017) on Prevention of deafness and hearing loss, and the WHO World report on hearing, 2021 . WHO-ITU Global standard for safe listening in video game play and sports.

  Video gaming and e-sports have surged in global popularity, captivating up to 3 billion enthusiasts worldwide. With a user base of 600 million on console platforms and 1.1 billion on personal computers, these activities have solidified their status as both premier entertainment forms and have born new streams of competitive gameplay, referred to as e-sports. The increasing prevalence of prolonged and loud audio exposure in these activities has raised serious health concerns, particularly related to hearing damage and sound-induced hearing loss. In response to this public health concern, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are commencing a work item to develop a standard for safe listening in video gaming and e-sports activities. The World Hearing Forum is a global network of stakeholders promoting ear and hearing care worldwide. Members of this advocacy network are committed to facilitate the implementation of World Health Assembly resolution WHA70.13 on “Prevention of deafness and hearing loss” and support the Member States in this regard. Over 430 million people require rehabilitation to address their hearing loss, of these, 34 million are children. In addition, over 1 billion young people   are  at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings and through personal audio devices. It is expected that these numbers will rise considerably in the coming decades, unless action is taken to p revent and treat hearing loss. The World Hearing Forum is filling a critical gap by bringing a collective vision to advocacy and collaboration in this field. 2025 World Hearing Day Small Grants Program. As part of activities promoting World Hearing Day 2025 , the World Hearing Forum (WHF) , the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Coalition for Global Hearing Health (CGHH) invite proposals for WHF-CGHH Small Grants for World Hearing Day 2025. The World Hearing Day 2025 will be observed on March 3rd  with the theme “Changing Mindsets: Empower yourself to make Ear and Hearing Care a reality for all". Request a hearing test - For newborns and school-age children and everyone above age of 50. Check your own hearing; - Use the WHO hearWHO app annually. - Visit a doctor if your score in below 50. Use assistive technology - Hearing aids and other devices, if  advised, can improve your ability to hear. - Captioning and sign language can make information more accessible. Stay informed - Educate yourself on good ear care practices. - Spread awareness in your community.

Choose devices with screen time or parental controls to help set limits for each session. Set-up a quiet gaming space to minimize background noise.   The  World Hearing Day 2025 theme builds upon the 2024 focus on changing mindsets towards ear and hearing care . We invite individuals of all ages to empower themselves to ensure healthy ears and hearing for themselves and others , with the theme, "Changing mindsets: empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all!" By encouraging individuals to recognize the importance of ear and hearing health , this campaign aims to inspire individuals to change behaviour to protect their hearing from loud sounds and prevent hearing loss , check their hearing regularly, use hearing devices if needed , and support those living with hearing loss .  Empowered individuals can drive change within themselves and in society at large.
